PET FRIENDLY

Pet-friendly apartments in
West Loop

Dogs and cats are welcome at 812 Adams. So is the fact that you will be outside with them four times a day. There are two dog parks within a four minute walk of the lobby, a vet one street over, and wide sidewalks the whole way.

Our pet policy

Both dogs and cats are welcome at 812 Adams, with a pet deposit and monthly pet rent. Breed and weight restrictions apply, so it is worth a quick call before you apply if you have a larger dog. There is no limit on how often you use the elevator at six in the morning.

What makes this building work with a pet

Every apartment has in-unit laundry, which matters more than you think when a dog comes home wet in February. Most apartments have a private terrace or balcony, so there is somewhere to stand outside without taking the elevator down. The package room means deliveries of food and litter are handled without you being home, and the keyless fob entry means one less thing to dig for with a leash in your hand.

Eighty apartments, not eight hundred

In a large tower your dog meets a different set of strangers in the elevator every day. Here it is the same forty or fifty neighbors, and most of them have a dog too. Smaller buildings are simply easier on an animal that pays attention to who belongs and who does not.

Where the dogs go

Mary Bartelme Park on Sangamon has the fenced dog-friendly area that the whole neighborhood uses, plus the splash feature in summer and the steel arches everyone photographs. Skinner Bark Park is the same distance in the other direction, with gravel, turf, shade, and dog-height fountains. Locals call it the 569. If your dog still has energy after both, Grant Bark Park sits east toward the lake with room to actually run.

Vets, groomers, and supplies

GoodVets sits on Jackson between Sangamon and Peoria, which is one street south of the building and the closest full-service vet you will find to any apartment in this neighborhood. West Loop Veterinary Care on Randolph is AAHA-accredited and stays open until eight most weeknights, which is the difference between taking a sick day and not. Paw Naturals is across from Mary Bartelme for food and supplies, and Dashing Dog on Lake handles grooming.

Patios that mean it

Most of Randolph and Fulton Market welcomes dogs on the patio from spring through October, and a few places keep water bowls by the door without being asked. It is one of the quieter reasons people with dogs end up in West Loop and stay.

One thing to sort out first

Chicago requires a DFA permit to use the fenced dog parks, which your vet can issue for a small fee, and your dog needs to be current on core vaccinations. Everywhere outside a fenced run is leash-required. Worth handling in your first week rather than your first weekend.
